How to look after Tree Purslane (Atriplex halimus) in the UK
Position & Light:
Grow in full sun in an open or sheltered position. This silvery-leaved, evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub is salt tolerant and wind tolerant, making it ideal for coastal gardens, hedges, windbreaks, gravel gardens and dry borders. Its mild, salty leaves are edible, and it is a useful perennial vegetable.
Soil & Watering:
Plant in well-drained soil, including poor, sandy, stony and chalky ground. Tree purslane dislikes waterlogged soil. Water regularly after planting during the first year, then only in prolonged dry spells. Once established, it is very drought tolerant.
Feeding:
No feeding is needed. It thrives in poor soil, and rich soil encourages soft growth that is more vulnerable to frost.
Pruning & Maintenance:
Prune in spring to keep plants bushy and compact, removing any frost-damaged growth. It responds well to trimming, so it can be clipped as a hedge. Harvest young leaves and shoots through spring and summer for use raw in salads or lightly cooked, taking only a little at a time. In colder areas, protect young plants with fleece in severe winters. Take softwood cuttings in summer as insurance.
Common Problems:
- Frost damage: Can occur in very cold winters. Cut back damaged growth in spring and shelter young plants.
- Rotting: Caused by wet, heavy soil. Improve drainage with grit.
- Leggy growth: Caused by shade or lack of pruning. Choose a sunny spot and trim in spring.
- Leaf drop: Natural in cold winters for semi-evergreen plants.
- Pests: Mostly trouble-free, though aphids may appear on new growth.
