How to look after your 60cm Aspen (Populus tremula) in the UK
Position & Light:
Grow in full sun in an open position. Aspen is a fast-growing native deciduous tree known for its rounded leaves, which tremble and rustle in the slightest breeze, golden-yellow autumn colour and silvery-grey bark. It suits larger gardens, wildlife gardens, woodland edges and groups of trees, and supports a wide range of insects, including the rare aspen hoverfly. Plant well away from buildings, drains and walls.
Soil & Watering:
Plant in moist, well-drained soil. Aspen tolerates most soils, including clay, but does best in damp ground. Water regularly during the first two summers while the roots establish, particularly in dry spells. Mulch around the base with bark or compost, keeping it clear of the trunk.
Feeding:
In most soils no feeding is needed. A mulch of well-rotted compost in spring helps young trees establish.
Pruning & Maintenance:
Stake young trees in exposed gardens for the first two years. Little pruning is needed apart from removing dead or damaged branches in late summer or winter. Aspen spreads by suckers, which can appear some distance from the parent tree, so remove unwanted shoots by cutting them at the base, or mow around the tree to keep them in check. Plant in groups for the best effect and to create a copse.
Common Problems:
- Suckering: Aspen produces suckers, which can appear across lawns and borders. Remove regularly or plant where it has room to spread.
- Leaf spot and rust: Common in damp summers. Remove and destroy fallen leaves in autumn.
- Canker: Dark sunken patches on bark. Remove affected branches.
- Aphids: Occasionally appear. Rinse off or encourage natural predators.
- Drought stress: Leaves may drop early in dry summers. Water young trees.
