How to look after Hibiscus syriacus in the UK
Position & Light:
Grow in full sun in a warm, sheltered position. This hardy, late-flowering shrub produces large, exotic, trumpet-shaped flowers from late summer into autumn, loved by bees and other pollinators. It suits sunny borders, patios, shrub borders and large containers, and thrives in warmer parts of the UK.
Soil & Watering:
Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. Water regularly in the first two years while the roots establish, and in dry spells through summer, as drought can cause bud drop. Container plants need regular watering. Mulch around the base with compost or bark in spring.
Feeding:
Apply a balanced fertiliser or a mulch of well-rotted compost in spring. A high-potash feed in summer encourages flowering, particularly for container plants.
Pruning & Maintenance:
Prune in mid to late spring, removing dead or crossing stems and trimming back remaining shoots by about a third to encourage flowering growth. Hibiscus is late to come into leaf, often not until late spring or early summer, so do not assume the plant is dead. Protect young plants in the first winters with a mulch around the roots and fleece in severe frosts.
Common Problems:
- Late leafing: Normal. Wait until early summer before assuming the plant is dead.
- Bud drop: Caused by drought, cold or sudden changes. Keep the soil evenly moist.
- Few flowers: Too little sun or a cool summer. Choose the sunniest position.
- Aphids: Common on young growth. Rinse off or encourage natural predators.
- Frost damage: Protect young plants. Cut back damaged growth in spring.
