How to look after Iris hollandica Coco Beach in the UK

Position & Light:
Grow in full sun in a sheltered position. This striking Dutch iris has unusual peachy-cream and caramel flowers on slender stems in early summer, and is excellent as a cut flower. It suits sunny borders, cutting gardens, gravel gardens and pots, and is loved by bees. Plant in groups for the best impact.

Soil & Watering:
Plant in fertile, very well-drained soil, ideally neutral to slightly alkaline. Add grit to heavy soil, as Dutch iris dislike wet ground, particularly in winter. Water regularly during growth and flowering, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. Allow the soil to dry out in summer after flowering.

Feeding:
Feed with a high-potash fertiliser, such as tomato feed, every two weeks while in growth to encourage flowering. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers.

Pruning & Maintenance:
Cut flower stems for the vase when the first buds begin to show colour, and the blooms will last well. Deadhead faded flowers. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering to feed the bulb for next year. In cold or wet areas, protect plants in winter with a dry mulch, or grow in pots in a cold frame. Divide congested clumps in late summer or autumn every few years.

Common Problems:
- Rotting: Caused by wet, heavy soil. Improve drainage with grit.
- Few or no flowers: Too much shade, lack of potash or overcrowding. Give full sun and divide clumps.
- Frost damage: Mulch in cold areas, or grow in pots under cover.
- Slugs and snails: May damage leaves and buds.
- Iris viruses: Mottled or streaked leaves. Remove and destroy affected plants.
