How to look after Raspberry Glen Ample (Rubus idaeus) in the UK
Position & Light:
Grow in full sun or light shade in a sheltered position. Glen Ample is a high-yielding, mid-season summer-fruiting raspberry with large, flavoursome fruit and spine-free canes, making it easy to pick. It suits fruit cages, allotments and larger gardens.
Soil & Watering:
Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Dig in plenty of well-rotted compost before planting. Water regularly, especially during dry spells and while the fruit is swelling, and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Mulch with compost or bark to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Feeding:
Apply a balanced fertiliser or a high-potash feed in early spring, and mulch with well-rotted compost. Avoid heavy nitrogen feeding, which can lead to lots of leaves and fewer fruit.
Pruning & Maintenance:
Grow against a post-and-wire support. After fruiting in summer, cut the canes that have fruited down to ground level, and tie in about 6-8 of the strongest new canes per plant to fruit the following year. Remove weak or surplus canes and suckers growing away from the row. Net the plants against birds as the fruit ripens.
Common Problems:
- Few or small fruit: Often caused by dry soil, too many canes or too much shade.
- Raspberry beetle: Maggots in the fruit. Pick fruit regularly and remove affected berries.
- Yellowing leaves: Usually caused by waterlogging or nutrient deficiency.
- Cane blight and spur blight: Dark patches on canes. Remove and destroy affected canes and improve air circulation.
- Wandering suckers: Pull them off at the base, or dig up and replant elsewhere.
