❤️ Why you'll love it

A vigorous, native fruiting shrub that produces juicy black berries in late summer to early autumn. Blackberry plants are reliable and hardy, thriving in a wide range of soils and conditions. The berries are rich in flavour and perfect for eating fresh, baking, or making jams and syrups. Spring flowers attract bees and other pollinators, and the plant offers valuable habitat for birds and insects. Best grown in full sun or light shade. May benefit from light training or pruning to keep growth in check and encourage better fruiting.

How to look after Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) in the UK

Position & Light:
Grow in full sun or partial shade. Blackberry is a vigorous, hardy, native fruiting shrub that produces juicy fruit from late summer into autumn, and is ideal for fences, walls, wildlife hedges and training on wires. Space your eight plants about 1.5-2 metres apart along a fence or support, as they grow vigorously.

Soil & Watering:
Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Blackberries tolerate most soils, including poor ground, but produce better crops in richer soil. Water regularly in the first year and during dry spells while the fruit is developing. Mulch around the base with compost or bark to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Feeding:
Apply a balanced fertiliser or a mulch of well-rotted compost in early spring. Avoid heavy nitrogen feeding, which promotes leafy growth at the expense of fruit.

Pruning & Maintenance:
Train stems along a post-and-wire support or fence. Blackberries fruit on canes that grew the previous year. After fruiting, cut the fruited canes down to ground level, and tie in the strongest new canes for next year, removing weak ones. Keep new canes separate from fruiting ones to make tidying easier. Wear thick gloves when pruning and picking. Pick berries regularly as they ripen, and net against birds if required.

Common Problems:
- Rampant growth: Blackberries grow vigorously and can spread. Prune and tie in regularly.
- Few or small fruit: Caused by dry soil, too much shade or overcrowded canes.
- Raspberry beetle and aphids: Check regularly and remove affected fruit.
- Cane blight and spur blight: Dark patches on canes. Remove and destroy affected canes.
- Tip rooting: Stems root where tips touch the soil. Remove unwanted new plants or use to propagate.

Supplied bare root, carefully packed with a moisture source to ensure freshness. Plant height: approximately 20cm.
Please remember that most plants (except Evergreens) are dormant in Autumn/Winter so your order may have no leaves until Spring.
