How to look after Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) in the UK
Position & Light:
Grow in full sun in an open position. This tough, UK native perennial has feathery foliage and flat heads of flowers through summer, and is loved by bees, hoverflies and other beneficial insects. It suits borders, meadows, wildlife gardens, gravel gardens and lawns, and is very hard to kill. Space your five plants about 30-45cm apart to allow them to knit together.
Soil & Watering:
Grow in well-drained soil of almost any type, including poor, dry and stony ground. Water after planting and during the first season to help roots establish. Once established, yarrow is very drought tolerant and rarely needs watering. Avoid waterlogged soil.
Feeding:
No feeding is needed. Yarrow flowers best and holds a neat, upright shape in poor to average soil. Rich soil leads to floppy growth.
Pruning & Maintenance:
Deadhead faded flowers to encourage further blooms and to prevent excessive self-seeding. Leave some seed heads in autumn for birds and winter interest, then cut back to the base in late winter or early spring. Divide clumps every two to three years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour and to create new plants. Yarrow can spread, so check its growth in small beds.
Common Problems:
- Floppy stems: Caused by shade or rich soil. Choose a sunny spot and avoid feeding.
- Spreading: Yarrow spreads by roots and seed. Divide and remove excess regularly.
- Powdery mildew: Can affect foliage in humid or crowded conditions. Allow air circulation and water at the base.
- Few flowers: Too much shade. Plant in full sun.
- Pests: Mostly trouble-free, though aphids and slugs occasionally appear.
