❤️ Why you'll love it

A tall, elegant evergreen tree, Shining Gum is known for its glossy green foliage, smooth bark and vigorous growth. Native to south-eastern Australia, it develops an impressive upright form and aromatic leaves that bring year-round greenery and a distinctive eucalyptus fragrance to the garden. Mature trees produce clusters of creamy-white flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. Best suited to large gardens and open spaces, Shining Gum is an excellent choice for those seeking a fast-growing tree with striking foliage and a bold, architectural presence.

How to look after Shining Gum (Eucalyptus nitens) in the UK

Position & Light:
Grow in full sun in a sheltered position, away from buildings, drains and overhead wires. Shining gum is a very fast-growing evergreen tree that can reach a great height, with smooth, peeling bark and silvery-blue young foliage that turns to glossy green as it matures. It suits large gardens, shelterbelts and woodland plantings, and is one of the hardier eucalyptus species for the UK.

Soil & Watering:
Plant in well-drained, moisture-retentive soil. Shining gum tolerates a wide range of soils but dislikes waterlogging and very shallow chalky ground. Water regularly during the first two summers to help the roots establish, particularly in dry spells. Mulch the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Once established, it is fairly drought tolerant.

Feeding:
In most soils no feeding is needed. A balanced slow-release feed in spring helps young trees establish, but avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers that cause soft growth susceptible to frost.

Pruning & Maintenance:
Plant young trees small, as they establish faster and are less likely to rock in the wind. Stake in exposed sites for the first two years. Little pruning is needed, apart from removing damaged branches. For a smaller plant with rounded juvenile leaves, cut back hard to near ground level in spring every year or two (coppicing). Protect young plants with a mulch and fleece in their first winter if hard frosts are expected.

Common Problems:
- Frost damage on young plants: Protect with fleece and mulch in the first winters.
- Wind rock: Fast growth can leave trees unstable. Stake young trees and plant small.
- Leaf drop or browning: Caused by waterlogging, drought or cold winds. Keep moist and shelter from wind.
- Peeling bark: Natural and attractive. No treatment needed.
- Large size: Mature trees become very tall. Position away from buildings and coppice or remove if it outgrows its space.

Supplied bare root, carefully packed with a moisture source to ensure freshness. Plant height: approximately 10cm.
Please remember that most plants (except Evergreens) are dormant in Autumn/Winter so your order may have no leaves until Spring.
